Vegan Treats in Cape Town: On The Go

If you’re on the lookout for vegan-friendly spots in Cape Town, you’re in for a treat! From decadent doughnuts to artisan croissants, here is a list of must-visit spots that are sure to delight any vegan traveler.

Hulis Donuts

Hulis has become a bit of an institution especially for those frequenting the Blouberg area on Cape Town’s stunning western seaboard. Located at Eden on the Bay in Big Bay, this charming café greets you with warm smiles, soft music, and the mouthwatering aroma of fresh doughnuts.

As self-professed doughnut lovers (my husband and I even had them as our wedding cake!), Hulis is a dream come true. Their selection ranges from apple crumble to lemon tart, with options that are filled, glazed, and sprinkled to perfection—making the decision process deliciously difficult! One visit is never enough.

What makes Hulis even more special is its proximity to the beach. After grabbing a treat, you can stroll by the ocean, or, if you’re heading along the West Coast, stop by for a coffee (they proudly serve Truth Coffee and offer plant-based milks as standard).

And don’t forget to try their buttery vegan croissants, sourced from the local artisan bakery, Doughmain.

Doughmain Artisan Bakery

Speaking of croissants, if you’re in the Tableview area, make sure to stop by Doughmain, where the magic happens. Run by talented artisan baker Samantha Nolan, Doughmain offers an array of baked goods. When I first ordered croissants from Sam, she generously offered a bag of ‘offcuts,’ and let me tell you—it was love at first bite. The texture and buttery sensation were better than any vegan croissant I’ve ever tried.

Samantha’s menu also includes sourdough loaves and other delightful vegan baked goods. She even offers frozen croissants for you to bake at home—perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy the taste of Doughmain anytime.

Stories Bakery

I first met Sarah on a rainy Saturday at the Willowbridge Slow Food Market, where her beautifully crafted milk tarts and lemon meringues instantly caught my eye. Glossy and piped to perfection, with crusts that seemed like they would melt in your mouth, it was impossible to resist.

When I noticed her brownies labeled as “Vegan,” I was intrigued, and we struck up a conversation. To my delight, Sarah revealed that all her baked goods are entirely vegan, as she runs a fully plant-based kitchen. Jackpot!

You can find Sarah’s vegan treats at various markets around Cape Town, or place an order directly through her website. From cupcakes and brownies to banana bread and more, her offerings are consistently delicious. Personally, I can’t get enough of her lemon meringue—I’ve had it multiple times, and it never disappoints!

The Creamery

I’ve only visited the one in Durbanville, in need of a post-shopping treat, and The Creamery at Village Square was the perfect stop. While they don’t have a vast range of vegan flavors, what they do offer is absolutely delicious. Their creamy, plant-based ice creams are a must-try, and with several locations dotted around Cape Town, it’s easy to satisfy your sweet tooth wherever you are. Some branches also serve coffee, so you can enjoy a full café experience. It’s simple, satisfying, and definitely worth a visit.

Fynbos Enterprises

We stumbled upon Fynbos Enterprises in Pringle Bay during a road trip, and it was a delightful discovery! This charming little store has something for everyone, but for me, it was all about their rich and velvety dark chocolate ice cream. It’s indulgent, decadent, and worth every bite. While they don’t offer a lot of vegan options, this one flavor is enough to make the trip—or even a detour—worth it! If you’re heading out of Cape Town for a coastal drive, this is a stop you don’t want to miss.

Milk on the Beach

At Milk on the Beach in Onrus, you can enjoy delicious vegan treats while soaking in the stunning view. Pictured here is the vegan waffle topped with ice cream which is available at their popular Waffle Shack! But the experience doesn’t stop there—this spot also offers fresh vegan sushi, which was just as delightful. You can choose to dine at the bustling takeaway shack or relax in their chic restaurant, both offering fantastic service. If you’re a dog lover, bring your fur friend along for a day at the beach. With its laid-back vibe and oceanfront location, Milk on the Beach is perfect for a relaxed meal with a view.
